With the summer movie season right around the corner, our excitement for multiple trips to the theater is building with each passing day. And with the blockbuster season comes another equally thrilling cinematic event: the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on June 3!

In addition to Tuesday's (April 25) announcement of the 12 nomination categories — including new additions Best Music, Best On-Screen Transformation, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance, Best Cast and Best On-Screen Dirt Bag — we are thrilled to announce that chart-topping indie-pop group fun. will rock the Movie Awards stage with a performance toasting the greatest party films of all time. "We are Young," from their latest album, Some Nights, has been holding strong at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for the past six weeks.

"The Movie Awards are all about celebrating the most popular films and performances from the past year that people actually went to see," said Stephen Friedman, president of MTV. "Moreover, we're thrilled to have Fun., whose instant anthem 'We Are Young' has lived at the top of the charts the past six weeks, and their performance showcases one of the biggest changes in this year's broadcast — a true melding of the worlds of movies and music — with a tribute to the greatest party films of all time."

Once again, MTV fans will hold the "Power of the Popcorn" in their hands. This year's brand-new Best Music category will allow fans to vote for a specific movie moment when the perfect song played during the perfect scene.

The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

Fort Atlantic releases new album on modded NES cartridge, no chiptunes in sight

Image

It's getting tough for bands to out retro each other these days (what with even cassettes making something of a comeback), but Birmingham, Alabama's own Fort Atlantic has managed to come up with something that's likely to break through the nostalgia-filled haze. While you'll soon be able to buy the band's self-titled debut album in all the usual formats, you can now pre-order a limited edition version that ships a week before the proper release date and comes in the form of an NES cartridge modded to hold a USB drive ($25 and apparently limited to just 50). That includes the full album in both lossless and MP3 formats, along with an added EP, videos and other bonuses. Unlike past NES album releases, though, there's no chiptunes to be found here -- you can listen to one song from the album courtesy of the Paste Magazine link below, and see frontman Jon Black explain the cartridge decision in the video after the break.

The Distro Interview: Microsoft Principal Researcher Bill Buxton

The Distro Interview: Microsoft Principal Researcher Bill Buxton

Bill Buxton has spent most of his career getting between humans and computers. While his initial focus was on music and digital instruments, that eventually led to an interest in human-computer interaction, and pioneering work with multitouch systems and other user interfaces. He worked with the famed hotbed of innovation Xerox PARC in the late 1980s and early 90s, and was later Chief Scientist for software firm Alias Wavefront before claiming the same title at SGI Inc. when that company acquired the former in 1995. After a time running his own Toronto-based design and consulting firm, he moved on to Microsoft Research in 2005, where he continues to serve as the organization's Principal Researcher.

We recently had a chance to pick his brain and get his thoughts on a range of issues, including state of design at Microsoft, the future of natural user interfaces, and whether we're really entering a "post-PC" era.

The Slow Decay Of The Microsoft Consumer

62009797001_66854922001_vs-66851521001Five years ago, Microsoft reported revenue of $14.398 billion. They reported a profit of $6.589 billion. Last week, for the same quarter, Microsoft's revenue was $17.407 billion. Their profit was $6.374 billion. The company is still growing, but not fast. And they're actually making less money. Compare that with Apple. Five years ago, revenue was $7.1 billion. Profit was $1.0 billion ? the first quarter with a billion dollar profit in company history. Last quarter, the company reported $47 billion in revenue. And they recorded $13 billion in profit. On the surface, an apples-to-oranges comparison, perhaps. But it points to something that has happened. Apple has completely taken over the consumer market, while most of Microsoft's growth these days comes from the enterprise side of things. Apple has destroyed Microsoft as a consumer technology company.

The Wanted will sit down with MTV News' Sway Calloway to not only celebrate the release of their self-titled U.S. debut EP, but also to premiere their highly anticipated video for "Chasing the Sun" during "MTV First: The Wanted," airing Tuesday, April 24, at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV.

Immediately following the MTV premiere, the cheeky British fivesome will stay on for an additional 30-minute live Q&A session with Sway on MTV.com. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or @MTVNews on Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVFirst or #AskTheWanted.

Not enough Wanted for you? Well, MTV News will follow the group all day long before they sit down for "MTV First" as they travel New York City to promote the album release, giving fans insider updates on all the latest happenings from each stop online and on mobile.

The Wanted were an MTV PUSH (Play Until Someone Hears) artist back in February just as their chart-topping single "Glad You Came" hit Stateside. They also stormed the stage in Las Vegas as one of the acts on MTV's 2012 Spring Break a month later.

The guys are also one of the 32 boy-band hopefuls in MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands, which pits some of the greatest boy bands of all time against one another, until fans vote their favorite group to #1. The battle rages on at BBB.MTV.com, with the first round ending on Thursday.

Fans can weigh in on the matches on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB. The winner of Battle of the Boy Bands will be announced on Monday, May 7, live on "AMTV" on MTV.

Voldemort?s Got Nothing On Jeff Bezos

voldemortE-books. Again. Amazon and the DOJ vs. Apple and "The Big Six." The future of reading. A breathtakingly stupid David Carr piece in the New York Times, which thankfully someone else took down paragraph-by-paragraph, so I don't have to. Elsewhere, an awesome quote which I want to cheer with the force of a million choirs of angels:
I am completely unmoved by the argument that if Amazon forces traditional publishers to sell books at lower costs, then the publishers will go away and we won?t have books anymore. Hogwash. The publishers built for a printed books world may go away, but their digital native versions will replace them.
Yes, it's time to trot out that obligatory William Gibson quote again:
"A middleman's business is to make himself a necessary evil." -- Neuromancer
There's certainly more than enough evil to go around here: Evil But Smart, represented by Amazon and its oppressive Kindle monoculture, vs. Evil And Flailingly Inept, aka Publishing's Big Six.

London Based Web Design Company, Liquid Bubble, Issues Advice ...

Unique and interesting web design will encourage people to visit your site

The design of your website should be appropriate to your product or company and stand out from the crowd

(PRWEB UK) 20 April 2012

Having a website is important for running a successful business. As markets become increasingly globalised it is important to be able to reach as wide an audience as possible and provide maximum convenience for potential clients. Internet marketing then, has become an easy and effective way of attracting clients and boosting profits.

Pritesh Ghelani, who works for Liquid Bubble web design in London has offered his top four tips for an effective website.

DESIGN

The design of a website should be appropriate to the product or company and stand out from the crowd. Although there are many free services online today which mean that it is possible to throw something together from home, it tends to make a site look more professional if the design is outsourced to a specialised company, allowing them to apply their expertise and making the company look more authoritative.

Make sure that you keep your content clear and concise and that your site is easy to navigate for even the most inexperienced web users and that you don?t clutter it up with excessive images and garish colours. In this case, simple is definitely more effectual.

CONTENT

It is often prudent to hire a content writer to create the content for a site, or if you have the time and ideas, you could do it yourself. Again, keep content simple and provide a clear breakdown of the services on offer. Adding a short bio is often beneficial for establishing a good reputation and adding references or appraisals from previous clients can boost a company?s image even further. Remember that the markets are often extremely saturated, so state just why it is that gives this company an edge over competitors

ECOMMERCE

Increasingly, business is done online these days, and so it is advantageous to implement an online ecommerce system on a website. This will ease the buying process for customers who will no doubt be impressed by speed and efficiency, encouraging them to return and helping to establish brand loyalty.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION (SEO)

SEO is becoming a more and more important part of making sure that the website works effectively. The vast majority of internet users will use search engines like Google and Yahoo to search for products and services so it is vital that when they do your name appears at the top, which will set the site apart from the competition. Using keyword research and strategy, article submission and social media organisation, specialist SEO companies can implement this work. Effective use of SEO can make a huge difference to a website and can often help to significantly improve the effectiveness of an underperforming site.

These companies can provide detailed reports, outlining the progress and performance of a website by highlighting which SEO methods and keyphrases are the most effective.
